Vrijwel\niedereen in Enschede kent wel iemand die heeft gewerkt in de\nfabrieken van Van Heek of bij de Polaroid. Het terrein is onderdeel\nvan het collectieve geheugen van de stad. De gebouwen spelen hier een\nrol in, maar de werkelijke waarde van dit erfgoed ligt in het verhaal\nvan ondernemerschap en hard werken. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De\ngrote bloei van de textielindustrie in Enschede in de negentiende\neeuwde volgde op de aanleg van spoorverbindingen met Duitsland en het\nwesten van het land. De stad was het industriële powerhouse van die\ntijd, en Van Heek één van de grootste bedrijven van het land. Na de\noorlog verdween de textielproductie echter snel naar Oost-Europa en\nveel van de gebouwen werden gesloopt. Het monumentale Gebouw Zuid\nbleef gelukkig behouden – een van de eerste toepassingen van\ngewapend beton in Nederland waar architect Arend Beltman kennis uit\nBerlijn inzette en zo een weverijgebouw met twee verdiepingen vol\ndaglicht opleverde. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\n1964 vestigde Polaroid zich in dit gebouw om de Europese markt te\nvoorzien. Langs de oude industriestraat verschenen nieuwe gebouwen\nvoor productie, assemblage en opslag van instant film. Helaas ging\nook deze industrie ten onder. Tenminste, daar leek het op: een aantal\noud-werknemers gaven Polaroid een doorstart en produceren weer film\nop het terrein. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het\neconomische gebruik is een belangrijk onderdeel van de identeit van\nhet gebied. Een flexibele omgang met de gebouwen hoort daarbij: zij\nverschenen, zijn keer op keer aangepast, gesloopt en weer opnieuw\nopgebouw. Deze evolutie van industrieel erfgoed stopt pas als de\neconomische waarde verdwijnt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
